Let’s face it, we can’t do anything about North Korea, Trump or hurricanes. While the New Year is still fresh, I’d like to offer two words to add to your 2017 goals: Be Aware.

Be Aware in public places. Whether malls, big box stores, restaurants or theaters. Be aware of exits, stairwells, upper levels, and other people. You never know if someone is having a bad day or has plans to change other people’s lives. Fear-mongering? No, just be aware.

Be Aware on roadways. Aside from the usual rules of the road, texting and talking on cell phones is right up there with driving under the influence, only much more prevalent. Notice drivers and be aware if they are distracted. Speed up or fall behind, but be aware they are not paying attention to you or anyone else.

Be Aware in your neighborhood. Who lives around you and who does not? What’s normal and what’s not? If inclined, offer a kind word or helping hand.

Be Aware in your home. Feel safe and secure in your home. Working smoke detectors, CO monitors. Know who is allowed in and restrict unknowns.

Be Aware of your health. Notice changes. Do annual physicals.

Be Aware of social media. You do not need to respond to every friend’s post. And remember, what you post will never go away. Never. People remember.

Be Aware of family and friends. Whether your clan or chosen clan--care.

Be Aware of your attitude. You wake up and you breathe. Be grateful. Grumps don’t thrive very well.

Perhaps some will say Be Aware is the same as Being Mindful. Maybe, but I think aware is more ‘awake’. The coming year is going to take some special attention, so be aware.

It's just a thought…
